DR. GLORIA'S REVIEW
Iberostar Bavaro's new golf course is well worth the experience. Completed in 2009, this is newest course on the island designed by P.B. Dye. The 18 holes, par 72 is an exceptional course that has features designed to test the skills of golfers at all skill levels. As you enter the property, you see the many sand bunkers which creates a deserted island canvas. The majestic club house was just getting its finishing touches and will be a great host for a large corporate tournament or outing. Take advantage of the driving range to get warmed up before the round as preparation is half the battle.

I met with club pro, Steve Cashore, an American and collegiate golfer from Indiana who introduced the course by saying, "You will really enjoy this course. Each and every hole is unique and there is great design variety in each of the 18 holes. Having played all of the courses, I consider this the best of the inland courses in the Dominican."

He was right. The Dye designed course is world class. There are the famous hidden Dye pot bunkers and the track is set up such that you can’t see people on other holes, futher lending to the deserted island feel. There are many exotic birds, waterfalls and water hazard on hole #10, cave bunkers #2 and challenging par 3s. The fairways seems generous and are banked inward to keep your balls in play. The challenge comes as one approaches the greens, which are undulated, graded and tapered. This concept was evident on the first hole and water appeared to the left side of the green making decision making on the approach shot key.

Hole #3 was even more challenging as there was water and flowers on the left side of the green and a cave and bunker on the right side. To get the ball on the green was the challenge. P.B. Dye uses 5 sets of tee boxes so that each golfer has an enjoyable round and can select his or her level of challenge. The beginner had some advantages and the experienced player had some challenges, most of which are optical. The round of golf was delightful due to the beauty of the course, the expansive sand waste bunkers, palm trees blowing in the breeze and exotic wildlife. The pace of play was ideal. There was no waiting and you played at your own speed and tempo. What a delight. The finishing holes had challenging uphill and downhill slopes to nagivate. If you stay at the Iberostar, Grand Hotel, you can get a free round. The food, service and accommodations at this location is said to be one of the best in this area. Service to and from the club and food and drink from the golf cart are included. It would be a great place to play an early round and head to the beach in the afternoon.
